Options For Decking

Choosing decking timber is a big decision, with many things to take into account. Along with your budget, you’ll also want to consider potential wear and tear, maintenance, appearance and feel. Softwood, hardwood, and composite are the three main types of timber available.

Softwood

Softwood decking is made from the trunks of coniferous trees such as pine and spruce. Fast-growing and widely available, softwood is the most affordable decking material. It is ideal if you’re on a tight budget or timeframe as the wood is quicker to cut and install.

Although pressure-treated softwood will lose its attractive colour after just a few years, if well maintained, it can continue to be solid and stable for upwards of 15 years.

Hardwood

Hardwood decking boards are often constructed from slow-growing woods like ash or oak, as well as a variety of other broadleaf plants. These trees are more difficult to process, and the fact that they take so long to develop is what makes hardwood decking a more expensive option.

Although it may not be the most economical option in the short-term, hardwood decking has a much longer lifespan, lasting for up to 50 years if maintained properly.

Composite

An artificial timber created using organic fibres and recycled plastic, composite decking is an eco-friendly alternative to hard or softwood that is longer lasting and easier to maintain. As well as being resistant to mould, mites and water, composite decking also doesn’t need to be stained or oiled and holds its colour longer than wood.

Composite decking is the most expensive option of the bunch, but it will outlive other options without the need for maintenance, making it an option that shouldn’t be overlooked.
