Natural vs Artificial Grass – Which is Best?

If there’s one thing we are blessed with in the UK, it is an abundance of green. There are plenty of beautiful forests and grassland areas, and most of the country is considered a countryside paradise. With that being said, there are two types of grass that people can have in their back gardens. You’ve got regular grass or artificial grass. Which is the best one out of the two? If you decided to invest in a brand-new space for your garden, which of the two would you be better off picking? Let’s take a look.

Real Grass

There’s nothing quite like natural grass for your home. Most people tend to use turf these days. You can try and grow it naturally with grass seed, but this takes a while. Laying turf is something you can do quite easily. The bulk of the work comes from preparing the soil, stripping the old lawn and levelling it off. You need to put the turf down ideally within 24 hours of getting it delivered. The cost of turfing alone can vary. One square metre of multipurpose turf can be anywhere from £2 to £3. You may have to apply existing topsoil, which means you could spend another £120 or so on a 750L bag.

Artificial Grass

The other option that you have available is artificial grass. Artificial grass doesn’t require any maintenance and can’t be dug up. Modern artificial turf looks like the real deal, owing to technological advancements. Because the fibres are cut at different lengths and come in various colours, it’s easy to replicate the natural grass look. In terms of cost, you’re looking at about £20 per square metre of artificial grass, accounting for VAT and installation. If you put artificial grass down correctly and look after it, it can last up to 10 years.

Which is Best?

The type of grass that you choose for your home will depend on your lifestyle. Lots of people like artificial grass for their convenience. It doesn’t require topsoil or laying it quickly; you can just put it down and forget about it. For many people, this convenience is the winning factor because the grass looks green all year round. However, some people are naturalists and prefer the authenticity of real grass. Natural grass offers more chances to grow plants and decorate a little bit more.

Final Thoughts

So, when it comes to natural grass versus artificial grass, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both options cost about the same in the end, and synthetic grass is considered the more convenient. However, if you are looking for a natural, utterly realistic choice, then real grass is the better option. If you’re going to put down a new turf for yourself, regardless of whether it is natural or artificial, it’s worth getting professionals to help because the way that you install the grass will have an impact on how long it can last.
